Carol Moseley Braun Statement on Proposed Chicago Casino
December 9, 2010 -- Mayoral candidate Carol Moseley Braun issued a statement on the proposed Chicago land based casino:
"As the State Legislature considers expanding gambling and allowing a land based casino in Chicago, I have two core principles that I will follow as Mayor if the legislation passes. First, the original intent of the Casino Gaming Act was to help economically disadvantaged communities. We must follow that intent. As Mayor, I will ensure that revenue from the casino is put to use in neighborhoods most in need of revitalization. Second, Chicago must own the license and use a publicly traded company to manage the casino. Our city's history demands a transparent operation, free from patronage and nepotism. Awarding a management contract to a publically traded company is the only way to guarantee the taxpayers of Chicago receive the full benefit of a casino."
